Place: A Writer for Visual Thinkers

Project overview

It’s difficult to think visually in existing writing apps. I created Place, an experimental text editor linking prose to a space for images, quotes, and other references.

My role

Concept, design, development

Place is a side project that I made to help my own writing, to dive deeper into kit.svelte.dev, and to have fun.

In the editor, sections of text are linked to areas of the space through ‘slices’, making it possible to organize knowledge spatially and write alongside.

Each section of text is linked to an area on the canvas

Place makes extensive use of motion design to communicate actions and state while keeping the UI as minimal as possible. This being a personal project, I took the opportunity to explore less common UX ideas like a notification system connected to the mouse cursor.

I designed a notification system tied to the mouse cursor. It’s fun.
Manipulating items in Place

The app is built in Svelte Kit and runs on Netlify, currently in pre-alpha.
